Composition of the Kogi State Judicial Service Commission (JSC)

The Kogi State Judicial Service Commission is constituted in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as it applies to State Judicial Service Commissions. The composition reflects a balance of judicial authority, legal expertise, and administrative oversight to ensure transparent and merit-based management of the judiciary in Kogi State.

The Commission is chaired by the Chief Judge of Kogi State, who presides over its activities and ensures judicial integrity is upheld across all functions. The other members of the Commission include key stakeholders from the judiciary, legal profession, and civil service, all appointed to serve in line with constitutional mandates.

The statutory composition of the JSC includes:

  • The Chief Judge of the State – Chairman of the Commission

  • The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of the State – Member

  • A Grand Kadi of the Sharia Court of Appeal – Member 
  • The President of the Customary Court of Appeal of the State – Member 

  • Two members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) who have been in legal practice for at least 10 years – Members

  • Two other members who are not legal practitioners but are persons of proven integrity and sound public standing – Members

  • The Secretary of the Commission, who is a Legal Practitioner and serves as the administrative head and Chief Accounting Officer – Non-voting member

This diverse composition ensures that the Commission functions with independence, impartiality, and professionalism in all judicial matters ranging from appointments and discipline to training and ethics enforcement.

Each member contributes significantly to the overall efficiency, transparency, and accountability of the Kogi State Judiciary.
