The Kogi State Sharia Court of Appeal understands that the public may have questions about our role, jurisdiction, and processes. This section provides answers to some of the most common inquiries we receive.

The Kogi State Sharia Court of Appeal is a constitutionally established superior court of record that handles cases governed by Islamic law. It was inaugurated in 1991 following the creation of Kogi State and operates under Section 275(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The Court hears both appeals and original cases involving Islamic personal law. This includes matters such as marriage, divorce, child custody, maintenance, inheritance, succession, and civil or commercial disputes under Sharia principles.

Yes. While the Court primarily hears appeals from lower Sharia Courts, it also has original jurisdiction in certain cases as provided by the Constitution and the Kogi State Sharia Court of Appeal Law.

Although it is not mandatory to have a lawyer, it is advisable to seek representation from a legal practitioner who is knowledgeable in Sharia law to ensure your case is properly presented.

The Court maintains registries in Adogo, Ankpa, Ayingba, Idah, Isanlu, Iyara, Kabba, Koton-Karfe, Lokoja, Ogaminana, and Okene to make justice more accessible across the state.

The Court operates Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, excluding weekends and public holidays.

Certified copies of judgments, rulings, or other court documents can be obtained from the registry where your case was filed. Appropriate application procedures and fees apply.
