Brief History of the Kogi State Sharia Court of Appeal
The Sharia Court of Appeal of Kogi State was established in 1991, following the creation of Kogi State from the former Kwara and Benue States. It was created under the Kogi State Sharia Court of Appeal Law, Edict No. 7 of 1991, in line with Section 18 of the Sharia Court of Appeal Law (Cap 122) of Northern Nigeria and Section 275(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
As a superior court of record, the Kogi State Sharia Court of Appeal exercises both original and appellate jurisdiction in matters relating exclusively to Islamic personal law, including marriage, inheritance, child custody, and other transactions governed by Sharia principles. Appeals are primarily taken from Area and Upper Area Courts within the state.
